Philosophy is a vast and complex subject, and on this page, I will focus on my preferred topics within the field.
Beliefs
- Nihilism: The belief that life is inherently meaningless and that traditional values and beliefs are arbitrary and without foundation.
- Existentialism: The belief that individuals must create their own values and meanings in life, as there is no inherent meaning or purpose to human existence.
- Absurdism: The belief that the search for meaning in life is inherently futile, but that individuals must continue to search regardless of the ultimate futility of their search.
Influences
- Philosophy: Other philosophical thinkers and schools of thought may influence one’s beliefs in nihilism, existentialism, and absurdism. For example, the works of Friedrich Nietzsche, Jean-Paul Sartre, and Albert Camus are often cited as key influences on these movements.
- Life experiences: Personal experiences, such as trauma, loss, or existential crises, can also influence an individual’s philosophical beliefs. For example, a person who has experienced a traumatic event may come to question the existence of objective meaning or purpose in life.
- Cultural context: The cultural context in which an individual lives can also shape their philosophical beliefs. For example, a person living in a society that emphasizes individualism and personal freedom may be more likely to adopt existentialist beliefs, while a person living in a society that emphasizes tradition and conformity may be more likely to reject traditional values and adopt nihilist beliefs.
Practical Application
One’s beliefs in nihilism, existentialism, and absurdism can inform how they approach their daily life. For example:
- A nihilist may focus on personal pleasure and hedonism, as they believe that there is no objective morality or value in the world.
- An existentialist may focus on creating their own meaning and purpose in life, such as through creative pursuits or personal relationships.
- An absurdist may find meaning in the act of searching for meaning, even if ultimate meaning is unattainable.
